The Committee, which was set up under Decision No.516-TTg of September 19, 1994 of the Prime Minister, is now named "The National Steering Committee for Clean Water Supply and Environmental Hygiene" directly under the leadership of the Prime Minister;

It is composed of: Minister of Construction Ngo Xuan Loc as Chairman; Prof. Pham Song, senior specialist of the Office of the Government, as Permanent Vice-Chairman, Ho Duc Viet, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union as Vice-Chairman; and representatives from the following Ministries anf branches: the Ministry of Planning and Investment; the Ministry of Finance; the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment; the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development; the Ministry of Health; the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs; the Ministry of Industry (the Vietnam Department of Geology), the National Center for Natural Science and Technology; the General Department of Meteology and Hydrology; the Ministry of National Defense (the water program of the Borderguard), as part-time members.

The Steering Committee has the function to coordinate activities of the Ministries, branches, mass and social organizations in carrying out the strategies, plannings, plans, programs and projects on clean water and environmental hygiene of the Government throughout the country.- (Summary)
